News.lk: Tamil National Alliance has a history of depriving the Tamil people their due rights and driving them towards destructive path by whipping up communalism.
This was stated by the Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa addressing a media conference at his Ministry yesterday.
Explaining in length the Minister said that the TNA never opposed the destructive acts done by the terrorists and acted as a party to these destructions. He said that they came to Parliament claiming they represent the LTTE and they did not condemn the destruction of the railway lines, industries, water supply systems and other public utilities by the terrorists even though the Tamil population were the losers by these acts. Ultimately even the lives of the Tamil people were threatened by the terrorists and the TNA completely endorsed the destructive actions of the LTTE.
The Minister pointed out that although the poor people in the country except the North were enjoying the Samurdhi facilities since 1994 the TNA in collaboration with the LTTE did not want to implement this scheme in the North and it was implemented only in Jaffna and certain parts of Vavuniya. It was only from this year that the people of Mannar, Kilinochchi and Mulativu received benefits of the Samurdhi.
He said that the objective of Divi Neguma is to uplift the living standards of the people and get them associated in the development of the country and the TNA is opposing the Divi Neguma Bill because they do not want life standards of the Tamil people uplifted because when that happens they will not be able to continue to keep the Tamil people under their jackboots.
Referring to Eastern Province elections held recently the Minister said that it was only UPFA that had candidates representing in all the three communities and the Tamil National Alliance had only Tamil candidates, and thereby espoused communalism in their election campaign and thereby deprived the Tamil people the possibility of getting their own Chief Minister, or Ministers or even Chairman of the Council elected.
The Minister assured that despite their objections the Government is committed to implement the Divi Neguma in the North and raise the living standards of the people in the North, since the government’s objective is to equitably distribute the fruits of development among all the people of this country.
