Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) yesterday complained of violation of election laws by state media in a letter to the Elections Commissioner.
Following is the full text of the letter:
On a day where the postal voting process is taking place, the Rupavahini Corporation and the Independent Television Network (ITN) have blatantly violated the election law by live telecasting the release of the election manifesto of the UPFA presidential candidate Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa
During our investigations we also received information that private media stations have been forced to air this event live.
Using state owned funds to air programs concerning just one presidential candidate is an obvious act of misuse of public resources. Hence we request you to urge all the media stations that aired this program to reimburse the costs incurred and to also grant an equal opportunity to other presidential candidates to air their programs subject to payment.
