A youth who pleaded guilty to the charges of having stolen a denim trouser from a shop at the world market complex in Pettah was sentenced to three months rigorous imprisonment by a Colombo Court yesterday.
In a complaint to the police, a textile shop owner said the suspect was caught while allegedly leaving the shop without paying for the Rs. 2,000 worth denim trouser. The shop owner had then handed the suspect over to the Fort police.
When the case pertaining to the matter came up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Kanishka Wijeratne, police presented a finger print report in respect of the accused. Presenting the finger print report in Court, police complained that he had been convicted by another Court over similar offence. Taking into consideration the suspect’s previous criminal record, the Magistrate ordered him to serve a three months rigorous jail term.
