Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake claimed yesterday that the CID should question former MP Thilanga Sumathipala in connection with the shooting of a group of UNP supporters in Kotahena.
He said that the statements made by bookie owners were part of opportunistic politics.
Over the weekend Sumathipala alleged that although the Elections Commissioner had promised to conduct a free and fair election, Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake had been able to unleash terror in Colombo.
Sumathipala charged that UNP candidate Karunanayake had violated election laws by using such a large number of people for campaigning activities in the Bloemendhal area and questioned whether this was “good governance”. On Saturday armed men attacked a campaign team of Karunanayake’s. So far two people have died and several others have been injured. Karunanayake has blamed the attack on Opposition political goons.
