The Government has decided to extend the official term of local government bodies which was due to expire by the end of this month.
Accordingly, the term of 234 local government bodies that was due to end 31 March has been extended until 15 May.
The Government has taken the decision to postpone in response to a request made by the opposition United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) to the Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils to extend the term by one year as a general election is expected to be held after 23 April.
Earlier it has been decided to hand over the administration of these local government institutes to the respective local government commissioners after their terms ended and the elections to those institutes were to be held under the mixed electoral system.
However, the Government has not yet taken a decision on which electoral system to be used at the polls.
