Visiting Speaker of the National Council of the Federal Assembly of Switzerland Christa Markwalder visited the Sri Lanka Parliament yesterday.
She paid a courtesy call on Speaker KaruJayasuriya at the Speaker’s Office in the Parliament. Speaker Jayasuriya focused on his Swiss counterpart’s attention towards the parliamentary reforms, tourism between the two countries and assistance extended to Sri Lanka by Switzerland. In response, Markwalder also pointed out the importance of parliamentary reforms.
Both leaders exchanged mementoes after the discussions.
Markwalder also paid a courtesy call on the Opposition Leader of Parliament R. Sampanthan at his office in the Parliament. They discussed the current situation of both countries and exchanged views. Mementoes were also exchanged to mark the event.
Before joining the luncheon meeting with the Members of the Sri Lanka-Switzerland Parliamentary Friendship Association, she observed parliamentary sittings and the parliamentary premises. Deputy Speaker ThilangaSumathipala joined the visiting diplomat at the luncheon, which was hosted by him.
Markwalderis scheduled to visit Kandy today.
