Strong winds have damaged over nearly 1000 houses in several parts of the country, according to the Disaster Management Centre. It said at least 800 houses were damaged in Ratnapura, Badulla and Nuwara Eliya Districts due to strong winds. Adverse weather has also forced the closure of all schools in Walapane and Nuwara Eliya areas. The Sabaragamuwa University will be closed until 21 July due to heavy winds over the western slopes of the hill country, the University’s Vice Chancellor has said. Over the weekend naval and fishing communities were requested to be vigilant as deep and shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo and Galle and Eastern deep sea areas (particularly Bay of Bengal sea areas) would be very rough at times as the winds speed can strengthen up to 70-80kmph. Other sea areas around the island will also be rough at times.
