Stable government essential to carry out development work: President

President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that programs for the benefit of the country could be conducted only under a stable government, emphasising that practices of good governance and law and order in the country had been safeguarded during the rule of the present Government as not witnessed before.
Addressing a meeting with officers of the Government Analyst and Sri Lanka Scientific Services Association on Sunday, he pointed out that he was able to eradicate terrorism and develop the country due to the ability to rise up as a nation without depending on the foreign countries.
He emphasised that the Government was not prepared to work according to the dictates of foreign countries.
The President said that the emergency law was lifted before removing the Prevention of Terrorism Act and that gang intimidations and taking of ransoms in Colombo had been stopped. Stating that the number of crimes had been reduced, he said the Government was at the forefront of implementing laws and that it did not meddle in law and order.
The President further said that there would be no problems in Geneva if the Government danced to the tune of Western countries. He said that the war was stopped due to the ability that prevailed as a nation.
He further said that money spent on purchasing rice, potatoes and big onions was now saved because they were grown in the country. The President pointed out that only a stable Government could work for the betterment of the country and the people.
A document containing proposals about future activities of Government Analyst and Sri Lanka Scientific Services officers was handed over to the President. A large group of people including Minister Tissa Vitarana and Justice Ministry Secretary Kamalini de Silva were present at the meeting.
