With the dawn of Unduwap Full Moon Poya Day on 6 December, the Sri Pada season 2014/2015 will commence today and will end on Vesak Full Moon Poya in May 2015.
The Government has carried out several development projects on the Sri Pada route and in the Sri Padasthana to provide facilities to pilgrims.
The Police has cautioned pilgrims to avoid bathing in streams and rivers in the area due to several deaths that were reported during the last season. People were also advised to refrain from consuming alcohol and narcotics and to avoid taking polythene, plastic and polythene to the peak.
The casket of relics and the statue of Sumana Saman deity will be taken in a motorcade from the Galpottawala Sri Pada Rajamaha Vihara to the Nallathanniya Sri PadaDharma Centre on Sunday.
Thousands of devotees make yearly pilgrimages to the mountain abode during the Sri Pada season.
