Sri Lanka’s second expressway opens for public viewing

The Colombo-Katunayake expressway will be open for public viewing for three days, commencing yesterday (22 October). Meanwhile, the expressway is due to be officially open to the public on 27 October. From 22 to 24 October, which arrangements have been made to hold cultural, sports and other events with people’s participation. During these three days of festivities no vehicles will be allowed to enter the expressway but people, both young and old, including school children are invited to walk on the road after entering from the main entrances at Peliyagoda and Katunayake participate in the festivities. The events are being organised by the local government bodies in the area through which the Highways, Ports and Shipping Ministry and the RDA constructed this expressway under the direction of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa on the advice of the President. The Colombo-Katunayake Expressway is Sri Lanka’s second E Class highway. The expressway which begins near the Colombo-Kelani Bridge ends at Katunayake covering a distance of 26 kilometres. The Road Development Authority states that twenty minutes will be the estimated time taken to travel from Colombo to Katunayake along the expressway. With construction work on the Expressway having commenced in 2009, the RDA stated that this is the first expressway in the country to be constructed using sea-sand as a raw material. The Expressway consists of a main control room and a network of CCTV cameras affixed at all major points for monitoring.
