Sri Lankan in New Zealand arrested for 2000 murder in Switzerland

Police in New Zealand have arrested an Auckland-based Sri Lankan man for a murder committed in Switzerland nearly 14 years ago. The 42-year-old Sri Lankan businessman is wanted by Switzerland authorities for the murder of his former partner, 23-year-old Kavitha Kandiah in the Swiss city of Basel on 13 December 2000. The suspect made his first appearance in Auckland District Court on Tuesday after being arrested on behalf of the Swiss Government, NZ Newswire reported. The Judge has ordered to suppress identification of the suspect by name since publication of his name could be potentially prejudicial. The Sri Lankan, a small business operator from Grey Lynn, according to the police have arrived in New Zealand in February 2001 using false ID and travel documents, and was granted New Zealand citizenship in 2004. The man lived in Switzerland from 1990 to late 2000. Switzerland wants to extradite the businessman and charge him with murder but New Zealand has no extradition arrangement with Switzerland. The Judge has ordered to hear the case on 2 September.
