Sri Lanka opposition MP threatens legal action against importing new consignment of substandard ceme

Colombo: Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekera, who has threatened legal action against the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) for importing and distributing substandard cement, says he, is yet to receive a response from the CAA to the issues raised by him.

Jayasekera said the CAA was the only authority that could take action against the sale of substandard cement under a false Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) certificate.

Meanwhile, the National Cooperative Council of Sri Lanka (NCCSL) says a shipment of around 14,000 bags of cement is scheduled to arrive in the country from Pakistan on 21 September.

The NCCSL comes under the purview of the Internal Trade Ministry and has been engaged in importing alleged substandard cement from Pakistan.

The second shipment of the same cement is to arrive in two weeks, the NCCSL has said.

According to the Council, the shipment of cement was exported by two Pakistani companies named Tatta and Lucky cement.

Head of the NCCSL, Bandu Ranawaka has told the media that Lucky cement has received SLS certification following foreign lab tests. (www.colombopage.com)
