Sri Lanka will get many benefits from China’s Silk Road concept, according to Senior Minister and Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama.
Dr. Amunugama, who just returned to the island after attending a meeting on the Asian Cooperation Summit on the Silk Road held in Lanshu in the Guangxi Province, said China has plans to make the Silk Road an economic cooperation.
Speaking to the media, the Minister said Sri Lanka has a special place in China’s maritime Silk Route because Sri Lanka was in the historic Silk Route as well.
The initiative will enhance the friendship and cooperation between the two countries, he said.
The envisioned land-based Silk Road and the Maritime Silk Route, which includes Sri Lanka, encompass several countries in Asia, Africa and Europe.
China insists that its investment in regional maritime infrastructure is economically-motivated and says that it will bring economic benefits to host countries.
Sri Lanka has expressed its support to China for the proposed Comprehensive Economic Cooperation in the 21st Century Marine Silk Road construction.
