Scholar and Leader of the World Naqshabandi Sufi Order Moulana Sheikh Nazim Al Haqqani of Cyprus passed away at the age of 92. Sheikh Nazım, born in Larnaca, on the southern coast of Cyprus was the disciple of Damascus-based Sheikh Abdullah Deghestani, who himself had many followers in the Middle East. Moulana Sheikh Nazim was a frequent visitor to Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan Naqshabandi community consider his passing a great loss for the whole of humanity. He was the majestic and noble leader of millions of people around the world who will feel a great void in their temporal lives without his physical presence to comfort them.
Sheikh Nazım became an influential figure throughout the 1950s and 1960s in Turkey, Europe, Asia and the Far East.
Moulana Sheikh Nazims Janaza (funeral) was held on 7 May after Asr in Selimiye Mosque in Lefkosa, Cyprus. Janaza prayers were conducted in the Dehiwela, Dewatagaha, Maradana, Kuppiyawatte, Nawala and Fort Jumma Mosques yesterday (9 May).
