Former Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Leader Somawansa Amarasinghe yesterday announced that he would be forming a new political party to fulfill people’s aspirations.
Addressing a press briefing yesterday, Amarasinghe stated that the leader of this new political party would be decided by the party members.
“We are planning to organise a big summit to talk about our new political party. People who want to join with us will participate in this summit. Some have already confirmed their participation. However, we will select the leader through a voting system,” said Amarasinghe, adding that this summit would be held within one month.
Expressing his views on the JVP, Amarasinghe emphasised that the Central Committee of the JVP must resign along with the JVP Leader.
“JVP members and all JVP supporters have a right to choose the correct person as their leader. Therefore the current leader should give a chance to them to do so,” Amarasinghe said.
“We will take to the streets requesting the Government to maximise the level of protection that they have allocated for President Maithripala Sirisena. We believe that President Sirisena’s life is under threat. We must protect him to ensure the country’s development,” Amarasinghe added.
