Government Minister and National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Wimal Weerawansa and the leader of the People’s Movement for a Just Society Venerable Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera yesterday discussed issues related to good governance, including abolishing the Executive Presidency. Weerawansa told reporters after the meeting that he met the outspoken monk on an invitation extended by the monk. He said the monk had emphasised three points, including abolishing the Executive Presidency and fully implementing the 17th Amendment to the Constitution. “We agreed that there need to be reforms. We need to have further discussions on priority areas for reforms,” he said. Meanwhile Venerable Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera said that abolishing the Executive Presidency is important to ensure good governance. The monk said that he had talks with Minister Weerawansa as part of a series of discussions he has been having with others on good governance. He noted that abolishing the Executive Presidency was something even President Mahinda Rajapaksa had assured through his election mandate in 2005 and the ‘Mahinda Chinthanaya’ policy. The monk said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa is in the best position to abolish the Executive Presidency and he urged Minister Weerawansa to assist in achieving that goal. (Colombo Gazette)
