The leader of the People’s Movement for a Just Society, the Venerable Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero has reached a consensus with some political parties and groups which met him yesterday. The Maubima Janatha Party led by Dr. Hemakumara Nanayakkara and the Nawa Sihala Urumaya were among the five political parties which met the monk for talks. At the discussion it was agreed that all political parties should work together on one platform with a common agenda, the key agenda being to abolish the executive presidency, Dr. Hemakumara Nanayakkara said. The Venerable Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero had said in August that if President Mahinda Rajapaksa fails to abolish the post of executive presidency, then he will gather the support of the public to field a common candidate at the next presidential elections. Sobhitha Thero had said that the main target of his movement is to ensure that the executive presidency is abolished. The monk said that even the current President had spoken against the executive presidency and so if he failed to abolish it, then a common candidate would be supported to do that. (Colombo Gazette)
