Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) yesterday lamented the growing trend of suppression targeting social media networks. Launching its Facebook page, SLPP Chairman G. L. Peris claimed that the Government is trying to silence media platforms critical of the State.

“Social media has the power to create or destroy a Government, therefore the current Government has no right to try and suppress these movements which are critical of their practices,” he claimed.

Prof. Peris alleged that there is no freedom of media as the Government claims, adding that social media freedom should be secured to enable the public to access accurate information. Ex-President Rajapaksa congratulated the party, joining the event held in his public relations office in Battaramulla via Facebook LIVE.

Prof. Peiris also said that anyone could like the SLPP page to keep up to date with the latest news about the party and current political matters. (CG) Pic by RuwanWalpola
