The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) yesterday requested President Maithripala Sirisena to remove John Amaratunga from his Public Order, Disaster Management and Christian Affairs Ministerial portfolio while claiming that he is interfering into matters of the Police in an unacceptable manner.
Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva at a press conference yesterday in Colombo said that United National Party (UNP) politicians were highly interfering into matters of the Police regardless of the warnings issued by President Sirisena.
“These politicians still haven’t learned a lesson though the President has warned them. Therefore, if Minister Amaratunga is going to continue his obstinate ways without even considering the wishes of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), we urge the President to give this Ministry to somebody else or to take-up the powers of this Ministry,” Silva said.
He also said that Minister John Amaratunga was frightened by the no confidence motion brought against him although he is not showing it.
“The no confidence motion is in our agenda. However, we are urging the President to remove Amaratunga from his Ministerial portfolio. Anyway let’s wait and see what happens,” Silva added.
