Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka (SF) claims he was offered the Prime Minister post by the Mahinda Rajapaksa government, just before he decided to resign from the military and contest for President in 2010. In a special statement yesterday, Fonseka denied reports that he was now having discussions with the Government to support President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the 8 January presidential elections. Fonseka said that in 2010 when several Government posts were offered to him, including that of Prime Minister, he had rejected the offers. He said he refused to be part of a corrupt Government and has no intention of doing so even now and so will continue to support Maithripala Sirisena at the election. The former Army Commander lost the 2010 presidential election and was later arrested over various charges and was also stripped of his military rank. Fonseka recalled that he suffered in prison after he was put there by the Government and in his opinion it is better to commit suicide than be part of that same Government. (Colombo Gazette)
