The UNP Leadership Council has decided to keep MP and former Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa’s position in the nine member body vacant, despite his refusal to sit on the decision-making body.
The Leadership Council which convened at the Parliamentary Complex yesterday decided that the two seats allocated on the council to Premadasa and MP Thalatha Athukorale would be left unfilled in case they reversed their decision to participate at a future date.
The two MPs, seen as members of the reformist faction that has been agitating for a change in the Party’s leadership, including the removal of Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, refused to sit on the Council saying it had not been granted the powers it had been promised as per the party’s agreement with the United Bhikku Front that brokered the arrangement.
The monks’ group has since backed the Council and the powers it has been granted.
