UNP sources say that party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe intends to appoint the party’s international secretary Sagala Ratnayake to parliament through the national list.
Ratnayake contested for the Matara District at the 2010 April election but failed to be elected.
Only two UNP parliamentarians — Mangala Samaraweera and Buddhika Pathirana — were elected from the district, and Sagala Ratnayake was placed third in the list of preferential votes.
Although Ratnayake was appointed as the party’s international secretary, the lack of a diplomatic passport was reportedly a hindrance to his work.
UNP sources say that a national list MP is to resign soon and the vacancy would be filled by Ratnayake. (www.colombopage.com)
