Governing United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) says it is confident of a landslide victory for the first time in Colombo at the upcoming local government elections on 8 October.

General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and Minister Maithripala Sirisena has said the UNP has been proven wrong in its belief that it was a dominant political force in the urban areas.

The UPFA has emerged victorious at every election held under President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the recent past, he has said.

He has added that all traditional bastions of the UNP fell to the UPFA and the main opposition party did not have a single power base in the country.

According to Sirisena, the UPFA is fielding a strong team, headed by former cabinet minister Milinda Moragoda, representing all ethnic, religious and social groups.

The Minister has assured that the governing UPFA would ensure that Colombo would be made the garden city of Asia by continuing with the current city development programme.

The ruling party has won 250 out of the total of 299 local government bodies that held elections so far.
