The Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau under the Irrigation and Water Management Ministry has been awarded a Rs. 5 million contract to conduct a pre-feasibility study of the proposed Badulla-Bibila-Wellawaya new railroad.
Construction of the new railroad from Badulla to Wellawaya via Bibile and Monaragala is a proposed project which has been identified under the Mahinda Chinthana programme. This road will be approximately 80km long and in this financial year Rs. 1 million has been allocated for the feasibility study, the Cabinet paper said.
“Considering the elevation difference of the terrain it is more appropriate to conduct a pre-feasibility study of the proposed project first covering the south eastern part of the country including city centers of Badulla, Bibile, Wellawaya, Monaragala and Ambilipitiya as well as to conduct the detailed feasibility study thereafter depending on the outcomes of the pre-feasibility study.”
The Cabinet paper went onto say that Rs.5 million has been allocated for the pre-feasibility study as the cost has been approved by the Ministry Procurement Committee on the recommendation of the Technical Evaluation Committee appointed by the Ministry Secretary.
