Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday said that the creation and operation of the present National Government was a rehearsal for the next Government which is going to be formed after the forthcoming general election. He also said that though electoral reforms were not being smoothly implemented, the Government was still pleased that the National Executive Committee (NEC) and all political leaders were involved in this process and there was support from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). PM Wickremesinghe, during a ceremony held at Temple Trees yesterday to distribute bicycles, said: “I agree that this procedure is not happening 100% as we expected. Nevertheless, it is a great achievement for us to step onto a common platform, arrive at a common stance and discuss a lot of political matters such as how to change the electoral system. All of us are working together like this after 1957 and this situation is only the beginning. Within the next couple of days we have to work together and give the promised relief to the people and finish everything by 23 April. Therefore this is a rehearsal because my wish is to make the whole Parliament a Government after the next general election.” The Prime Minister added that under this new system some political parties might accept ministerial posts while some might not, but that those parties and representatives would become Chairmen of the 20 new Working Committees that were going to be formed in Parliament. “Then decisions will be taken after talking to these ministers and Chairmen. So this current situation is a rehearsal to go for that new system and such rehearsals are required for new systems. It is only through such experiments that something new will come into being and do good for the people,” Wickremesinghe said.
