Opposition United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday called for an “army-style” battle to win the Uva Provincial Council elections. The UNP leader said that every family must have its own Lieutenant General, Sergeant and a Colonel to battle the elections. He said the UNP needs between 12,000-13,000 platoons in order to secure victory at the polls with the support of every household. “This is a house to house battle. No point in going to UNP houses and seeking support. If we do this now we have six months to battle. Get ready and prepare your army,” he said. Wickremesinghe added that Sri Lanka needs a UNP government in order to re-establish democracy and bring down the cost of living. He said as part of its future plans, the UNP wants to abolish the Executive Presidency, fight against corruption and ensure the independence of the judiciary. (Colombo Gazette)
