Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa asserted that he had an obligation to develop the Kurunegala District like he had done with the Hambantota District.
Explaining his rationale for choosing to contest from Kurunegala, Rajapaksa said that his decision was due to historical reasons.
“Kurunegala was a historical capital in Sri Lanka and the Tooth Relic had been located there to ensure its protection. I have an obligation to develop Kurunegala in the same way that I did with Hambantota. Therefore I selected Kurunegala from the pool of invitations which came to me from several districts,” the former President stated.
