The Prof. E.M. Jayasinghe inaugural memorial lecture will be held on 26 July at the Open University, Nawala.
The memorial lecture will be conducted by Colombo University Physics Prof. Chandana Jayaratne and will be titled ‘Lightning Risk Assessment and How to Prevent Lightning-Related Hazards’.
The lecture is organised by the Department of Physics of the Open University of Sri Lanka and Physics Spectrum Society. Venue will be the seminar room of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Open University of Sri Lanka. All are invited.
Prof. E. M. Jayasinghe, Emirates Professor of Physics at the Open University of Sri Lanka, retired from service on 30 September 2011 after a dedicated service of 43 years to the university system of Sri Lanka.
He accepted the Chair in Physics at the Open University of Sri Lanka on 15 June 1983 after serving the University of Colombo for 15 years. Prof. Jayasinghe was the Head of the Department of Physics for several terms. He functioned as the chief student counsellor for six years from 1994 to 2000 and served as the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences from 2000 - 2004.
During his sabbatical leave period from 1980-1981 he was engaged in research in the field of Nuclear Physics and established the collaborative research link in mass spectroscopy with the University of Uppsala, Tandem Accelerator Laboratory, which is still progressing at the University of Colombo.
Prof. Jayasinghe was a gentle and devoted teacher. He has been commended by many organisations for the tremendous national service he has done in the field of physics in Sri Lanka. He contributed immensely to the development of OUSL over a period of 28 years.
