The Government yesterday took measures to subsidise the cost of the essential food basket from Rs. 1,515 to Rs. 975.
The items available for purchase at the Laksatosa outlets were reduced in price to help consumers deal with the increase in inflation.
A statement issued by the Trade Ministry highlighted that this move follows instructions issued by both President Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremesinghe. “The Government has made this decision in order to support the general public to reduce their cost of living during the coming Sinhala and Hindu New Year season,” the statement said.
Accordingly, this food basket consisting of 10 essential items – dhal, potato, big onion, rice (raw white), dried sprats, sugar, canned fish, chillie pieces, green gram and milk powder (Sathosa) which can be purchased by the consumers between 10 and 20 April 2017 at sathosa outlets island-wide. The Government expects to sell one million food baskets during this period.
