President to open Weligama Muhiyaddeen Jumma Masjid today

The opening ceremony of the Weligama Kapuwatta Muhiyaddeen Jumma Masjid after reconstructions will be held on 15 March 2014 at 9:30 a.m. It will be held under the patronage of His Holiness Rifai Moulana U.P. Seyyed Muhammad Ashique Thangal.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be the chief guest at the ceremony along with Southern Province Governor Kumari Balasiruya, ministers, MPs and diplomats.
The Kapuwatta Jumma Mosque in Weligama, located in the southern part of Sri Lanka, was re-built in 1887 by His Holiness the late Seyyad Muhammad Yoosuf Moulana Thangal, the founder of the Rifai Thareeqa in Sri Lanka. The mosque will be reaching its 127th year.
Over the years, improvements have been made to the mosque by the sons and grandsons of the late Thangal - His Holiness Al-Haj Nalla Koya Thangal and His Holiness Al-Haj Yoosuf Koya Thangal. The mosque is now managed by the Rifai Thareeq Association, under the patronage and guidance of his great grandson His Holiness Al-Haj U. P. Seyyad Ashique Thangal, spiritual leader and life patron of the association.
This Mosque was built by the grandfather of Rifai Moulana Muhammad Ashique Thangal and his forefathers since 1877 have been rendering yeoman service to Muslims of Sri Lanka with the teachings of the Holy Quran and the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad. They have rendered more than 125 years service to the community.
The Rifai Thareeq Association of Sri Lanka was founded in 1877 by His Eminence Seyyid Muhammed Yoosuf Rifai Thangal, at the Mohideen Mosque, (now known as Rifai Thangal Lane), Colombo 12. He was the great grand-father of our present Rifai Moulana Al-Haj Muhammad Ashique Thangal.
It is this task that the Rifai Thareeq Association of Sri Lanka is engaged in, under the able guidance throughout the long years by the Rifai Moulana Al-Haj Muhammad Ashique Thangal family, who are the direct descendants of Prophet Muhammad (on whom be peace and blessings).
The Sri Lanka Muslim Community appreciate the noble services of the Rifai Thareeq Association services past several years.
In the year 2003 Rifai Thareeq inaugurated Refayiya Ladies Arabic College at Kapuwatte with 35 students. The college provides residential facilities to the girls, particularly orphans, needy Students. general secular education up to GCE Advanced Level and with Islamic religious knowledge leading up to the Department of the Examination qualification for Islam teachers and the Moulavia qualification, by the end of four years. In addition, the College provides programs in IT, English and other vocational skills during the course.
The Management of the Association commenced in August 2004 art Campus for the College with facilities for a montessori, lecture hall, IT centre, CD and reference library, hostel, reception hall, and Mosque for ladies.
The Arabic College convocation ceremony passing out of the Moulaviya will be schedule take place same day at the college premises at 4 p.m. with the distinguished speakers President’s Counsel Faiszer Musthapha and Justice A.W.A. Salam. It will be held under the patronage of Principal of the College Moulavi M.S. Abdullah Rawli.
Rifai Thareeq Association of Sri Lanka also organised its 137th year Rifai Feast Flag Hoisting Ceremony to mark the commemoration of His Holiness Sulthanul Aarifeen Seyedna Ahamadul Kabeerur Rifai was held on Sunday, 2 March 2014 at the First Mosque Lane, Colombo and Thammam will be held on 23 March at 10 a.m. It will be held under the patronage of His Holiness Rifai Moulana U.P. Seyyed Muhammad Ashique Thangal.
