Sri Lanka’s first coal power plant, ‘Lakvijaya’ will be opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa today at Norochcholai, Puttalam.
The Norochcholai Coal Power Plant would provide around 300 MW to the national grid which is 17% of the consumer requirement.
The second phase of the project has also commenced and it will add 600 MW to the national grid.
The government of China has provided USD 455mn for this task which was initiated in July 2007.
Sri Lanka has allocated Rs.300mn which is the balance amount.
