President Maithripala has requested the Maha Sangha to provide the required guidance and assistance for the program carried out by the Government to preserve manuscripts made of Ola leaves which contain thousands of years of Sri Lankan history.
The President was speaking at the ceremony to unveil the pinnacle of the newly-built Chaithya within the premises of the Pirivena of the Asgiri Maha Viharaya in Kandy, on Monday.
He stated that the Government had implemented a comprehensive program to preserve the Ola manuscripts which were facing destruction due to decay. He said relevant parties had been advised to take steps to preserve them.
He also requested the guidance of the Thri-Nikayika Maha Sangha over the programs to be carried out to spread Buddhism worldwide during International Vesak week.
This Chaithya, which was built at a high elevation in Kandy, is 145 feet in height and 65 feet in diameter. The Chaithiya includes a museum, a shrine room with Buddhist paintings and a restroom for devotees to use for meditation.
This Chaithiya was built by high-skilled professionals with the advice of Asgiri Maha Vihara Chapter Deputy Registrar Narampanave Ananda Thero.
The President, who engaged in religious activities, also offered Atapirikara to the Maha Sangha.
He handed gifts to the artistes.
The Maha Nayaka of the Asgiri Chapter Varakagoda Gnanarathana Thero, Anu Nayaka of the Malwathu Chapter Niyangoda Vijithasiri Thero, Ministers Lakshaman Kiriella, S.B. Dissanayake, Governor of the Central Province Niluka Ekanayake and Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake were present at the occasion.
