The Government yesterday appointed 3,802 new Grama Niladharis to handle the grassroots level public administration throughout the country.
The new village officers, selected via a competitive examination, were granted appointments at a ceremony held in the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Addressing the newly appointed village officers, the President said that they have a great responsibility in creating good governance in the country and they also have greater opportunities to serve the people.
The President further said that the service of the village officers is essential at this juncture as the country is heading towards a rapid development following the end of terrorism.
“There was a period in which the public service was neglected without paying adequate attention. The present government has totally changed this situation and created many job opportunities in the state sector,” the President added.
The President pointed out that the development which was limited to urban areas in the past has now encompassed the rural areas. The Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs organised the event.
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Ministers, W.D.J. Seneviratne and Rishad Bathiyudeen, Deputy Ministers Lakshman Wasantha Perera and Wijaya Dahanayake, and Secretary to the Ministry P.B. Abeykoon were also present.
