The Democratic National Front says abolishing the Executive Presidency will not be the one and only priority for Tamils in the North and East but a real and respectable political settlement. Dr. N. Kumarguruparan, the leader of the Democratic National Front and former Western Provincial Councillor, had said this during a meeting with the leader of the People’s Movement for a Just Society, the Venerable Maduluwawe Sobhitha thero. In an emailed statement, Dr. Kumarguruparan said that the Venerable Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero had indicated the main goal should be to abolish the Executive Presidency while the rest is secondary. However Dr. Kumarg-uruparan said that a common candidate who enters the political arena for the first time with the sole intention of abolishing the Executive Presidency cannot expect the majority of the Tamil votes in the North and East. “There cannot be any doubt that there is a strong opinion that the abolishment of Executive Presidency has attained the zenith as a top priority. But on the other hand, a political solution to the national issue and peaceful, respectable, and pragmatic devolved powers and proper implementation of the 13th Amendment now stand above everything as paramount priority for the majority of the people of the North and East. Tamil people of North and East and their political leaders are facing various unsettled issues. An election mandate must coin all these together,” he added. Dr. Kumaraguruparan also said that in his view the main opposition United National Party (UNP) was the only political party which could provide the solution expected by the people. (Colombo Gazette)
