General Secretary of United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) MP Susil Premajayantha has resigned from his post in the party with effect from August 24.

Premajayantha has tendered his resignation letter to party leader President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday.

In his letter to the President, Premajayantha expressed his displeasure about the way certain associate parties mislead the public through their actions resulting from misunderstanding of facts.

According to Premajayantha, the Enjoining Order on August 14th limited his freedom when the final National List was being prepared and it was out of his control. Some party leaders of the UPFA have started to severely criticize him without understanding this situation. As such he said he considers it is not appropriate for him to remain the General Secretary of the Alliance.

Premajayantha said he has decided to step down paving the way for the others to work according to their aims but added that he would continue to engage in political activities as a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).
