Commenting on former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka voting at the Western Provincial Council election, Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said that he could not prevent anyone whose name was in the voters’ list and produced the National Identity Card from voting.
The Election Commissioner further said that if anyone has objection they can file them and until then he will not take any action.
Fonseka’s voting has created a controversy in the country since some argue that he has no civic rights following convictions by a court martial and the High Court.
Fonseka however argued that his civic rights are intact and he could contest the elections.
Legal experts say that those who object it would have to seek a definition from the Attorney General.
