Police officers arrested for death of teenage suspect in custody

Sri Lanka police have arrested seven police officers attached to the Kandaketiya Police Station including a sub-inspector yesterday over the death of a teenage suspect while under custody.
Police media spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana told media the seven police officers were involved in arresting a group of five suspects who were engaged in an illegal treasure mining in a forest reserve.
A sub-inspector, 4 police constables, a civil security assistant and a member of the Civil Defence Force arrested the five suspects, including the deceased, 18-year-old Sandun Malinga on May 07. Following day the teenage suspect was admitted to the hospital where he died of his injuries, received while he was in remand custody. The magistrate’s inquiry and postmortem examination carried out Saturday had revealed that the deceased had been assaulted during custody.
The police officers were arrested yesterday on suspicion of assaulting the teenage suspect and the officers were produced before Badulla District Court yesterday, the police spokesman said. The officers have been remanded until May 23, and an identification parade will be held on May 16.
