Police nab Jaffna criminal gang

The Sri Lanka Police have apprehended an underworld criminal gang that had emerged after the end of the war in Jaffna in the Northern Province. The Kopai and Atchchuvely Police Stations arrested seven members of this underworld gang after thorough surveillance. The police also seized several weapons including hand grenades and seven motorcycles. The group which has named themselves as the Ava Group was led by a person called Kumakeshan Vinodan alias Ava who is now under arrest. The group of about 20 young gangsters is suspected of engaging in a series of crimes including kidnapping, robbery and assaulting a police officer, the police say. The group has terrorised the people in the Northern Province and they were reluctant to inform the police about them due to fear of reprisals. The police are hunting to arrest the remaining members of the gang Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohan said.
