Police exclusively for public service: President emphasises

President Maithripala Sirisena emphasised that the Police is an institution that protects the common people, but not the Government or politicians.

“When we focus our attention regarding the past few decades of our country, there are many facts and evidence of how some politicians used the Police for themselves as well as how closely some Police officers associated with the politicians,” the President said.   

He made these remarks addressing the 150th Anniversary celebration of the Police Day held at the Bambalapitiya Police Grounds on September 03.

The Police have a comprehensive responsibility to ensure the law and order in the country, the President said adding that it is a humanitarian task which goes beyond the assigned responsibilities. 

Our Police services also should be subject to change with this modern technological world and the Government is working in accordance with their policies to provide new technological knowledge, professional expertise, requisite trainings and all other required facilities for the Police services, he added. 

The President extended his respect and thanks for all the Police officers irrespective of their ranks, who showed great commitment for their service and sacrificed their lives for the Motherl and during the great police history of 150 years. During the Ceremony a special memento was presented to the President and the President also pinned a special medal on Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya ,Minister Sagala Ratnayake ,Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, State Minister  Ruwan Wijewardena, Secretary to the President P.B. Abeykoon , Defence Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Secretary to the Ministry of Law and Order Ministry  JagathWijeweera, the Attorney General Jayantha Jayasuriya, and numerous members of the police force including the IGP Pujith Jayasundara participated on this occasion.
