PM tables committee recommendation on Welikada attack

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday tabled the recommendations of the committee appointed to investigate the killing of prisoners held in the Welikada Prison on 9 November 2012.

According to the Premier, necessary instructions had already been issued to Minister of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs D. M. Sawminathan as soon as the report was received in June last year. Condemning the crime that took place during the Rajapakse regime, PM Wickremasinghe announced that Rs.500,000/- compensation will be paid to the closest relative of each victim and Rs.100,000/- to all those who were injured.

“Minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe appointed a committee on 20 January 2015 seeking recommendations. The committee comprised Former High Court Judge Nimal Nambuwasam, Former Ministry Secretary S.K. Liyanage, and Former Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Asoka Wijethilake. The committee report was presented to the Justice Minister in June,” he added. (AH)
