Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the US Assistant Secretary of State for Central and South Asian Affairs Nisha Biswal have held wide-ranging discussions on the current political, social and economic trends of the country.
The Premier met with Assistant Secretary Biswal Friday on the sidelines of the Indian Ocean Conference 2016 held in Singapore. The meeting took place at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Singapore.
During the discussion, The Prime Minister and the U.S. official paid special attention to the political challenges facing the countries of the Asian region, as well as Sri Lanka’s future development programs. The Prime Minister explained in detail the development plans regarding the Kandy, Colombo, Hambantota Economic Corridor and the Eastern region development plans, including Trincomalee and surrounding areas. “We also discussed the necessity to implement a long-term sustainable program, in order to help the citizens in the North who were victimised by the war, so that they can get back to a normal lifestyle once more,” the Premier’s office said in a communiqué. Assistant Secretary Biswal, while commending the accommodating nature of the Yahapalana government, further expressed her willingness to provide assistance for the benefit and betterment of Sri Lankan citizens.
