“Only President Mahinda Rajapaksa through his ‘Mahinda Chinthana’ was able to build a strong foundation and uplift the women in our society,” said Minister of Power and Energy Pavithra Wanniarachchi at the ceremonial opening of the SLFP Women’s Wing Headquarters on 27 November at T.B. Jaya Mawatha, Colombo 10. This ceremony, which was held with the participation of SLFP National Organiser and Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources and SLFP Senior Deputy Chairman Nimal Siripala Silva and All Island SLFP Women’s Association Patron Pushpa Rajapakse. At this ceremony Wanniarachchi stated that Rajapaksa who strengthened women should be protected, noting that this was the foremost duty and responsibility of all women in today’s context. She continued: “We feel that the President is the only person who after coming to power did a great and yeomen service to the women of this country, especially by extinguishing the flames of war and putting an end to the suffering of the women. When little children were taken to hospitals as a result of the ruthless terrorists exploding bombs, it was the mothers who kept guard at the schools in order to protect their children. Our President assumed the office of president in 2005 and by 2009 he managed to end the war. It was the women who reaped the most benefits by this action. “He gave jobs to 75,000 graduates. When there is an unemployed graduate at home, the people who suffered most were the mothers. It was the President who was able to give them some relief. He also increased the Mahapola scholarship to Rs. 4,000, thereby helping the needs and aspirations of the university students and ended the agony and sorrow of the mothers. It was our President who recognised the mothers of the war heroes and treated them well. This was done so that there will never ever be a war again. “He has also given the first place to mothers in his ‘Mahinda Chinthana’. He has given a large amount of relief to the women and extinguished their burning sorrow. It is a great strength and fortune to us to know that the women of this country are lining up to ensure the victory of our President.”
