The People’s Action For Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) organisation yesterday urged the National Delimitation Committee to complete the delimitation process of electorates before tomorrow (31 August) as it promised earlier.
Writing to Committee Chairman Asoka Peiris, PAFFREL claimed keeping local Government authorities under officers’ administration for nearly two years by extending the terms without holding the election was a violation for the democracy.
It added that if the committee gazetted the new delimitations as soon as possible, the Government could hold the LG polls without further delay.
PAFFREL called for the announcing of new delimitations at least within the first two weeks of September if the committee failed to deliver on its promise.
PAFFREL has sent copies of the letter to Elections Commissioner MahindaDeshapriya, Provincial Councils and Local Government Secretary Kamal Padmasiri and all other relevant authorities.
The National Delimitation Committee was appointed by the Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry end last year as a five-member-committee comprising Peiris (Chairman), Prof. P. BalasundaramPillay, C.N.S.W. Mathew, Upul Kumarapperuma and A.S.M. Misbah.
