The Government distributing motorcycles to UPFA provincial level politicos has created uneasiness among Opposition politicians, according to Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga (UNP MP, Gampaha).
Requesting Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa to consider distributing motorcycles to Opposition politicians at provincial and the local Government levels, MP Amaratunga said: “It is unfair to give bikes to certain politicians supporting the Government. Why is such step-motherly treatment meted out when the presidential election is just around the corner?”
However, Speaker Rajapaksa wanted to know, if a motorcycle was given, “will the respective riders join the UPFA?” to which MP Amaratunga said: “It is a democratic country and we have no barriers to those who are joining or crossing over to Government.”
Speaker Rajapaksa assured that he would make the authorities give motorcycles to all politicians at rural levels.
