Opposition parties are contemplating legal action over a decision by the Elections Commission to redistribute seats in the two districts of the Uva Province ahead of elections in the region over the next six weeks.
Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya announced yesterday that the number of seats in the Badulla District have been reduced from 21 to 18, while the seats in the Monaragala District have been increased from 11 to 14.
UNP Parliamentarian Eran Wickramaratne charged earlier this week that the redistribution was aimed at giving the Government an unfair advantage by reducing the number of seats in a district where its election fortunes were weaker.
Both the UNP and the JVP are in consultation to discuss taking the Polls Chief to court over the issue.
Meanwhile the Elections Department also announced yesterday that nominations for the Uva Provincial Council elections will be accepted from 30 July to 6 August.
The date for the Uva Provincial Council election will be announced once the nomination period is concluded, the Department said. (DB)
