Even though the military defeated the LTTE in 2009, the terrorist organisation’s international network was still actively raising money and campaigning for Eelam, according to a recent US State Department report, which was cited in Parliament by Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva.
Highlighting the contents of this report, De Silva demanded that the Government inform the House of the measures being taken to prevent the LTTE from reorganising both locally and internationally. He also called for close scrutiny to be paid to LTTE sympathisers, including those NGOs known to have supported the creation of Eelam.
“Recently 13 LTTE supporters, the masterminds behind the attacks on the US Embassies in India and Israel, were arrested in Malaysia according to this report published by the US State Department. There is a list of 16 different diaspora organisations listed in the report and these were the same proscribed by the Sri Lankan Government some time ago. So, it is clearly visible that the threats looming over Sri Lanka remain and the danger remains,” said De Silva.
The Government will respond to these claims during the course of the week.
