The Government of Norway will contribute $ 1.2 million (NOK 10 million) to provide relief to the people of Sri Lanka affected by floods and landslides, the Norwegian Embassy in Colombo said.

“Around half a million people in Sri Lanka are affected by flooding and devastation due to heavy rains in recent days. Norway will contribute NOK 10 million to relief efforts,” Norway’s Foreign Minister Børge Brende has said. “More and more extreme weather shows how important it is to prevent and to have preparedness for climate change and natural disasters. Human suffering could have been saved and it is also far cheaper to prevent than to repair afterwards,” says Brende.

The funds are channelled through the UN and organisations that are already working to assist the affected areas.
