Ministry of Power and Energy sources say that the country’s first-ever coal power plant will commence preliminary operations for power generation this month.
The power plant is to be seasoned with the use of diesel as fuel instead of coal. Actual coal power generation is to commence in January 2011.
The coal power plant, situated in Norochcholai in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka, will generate 300 megawatt in the first stage. The generation capacity is to be increased up to 900 megawatt through the second and third stages.
The Ministry says the construction is 95% complete now. The construction of the three phases of the US$ 1.35 billion plant is being carried out by a Chinese company.
