The Public Utility Commission has recommended to the government not to increase the electricity tariffs this year. The recommendation has been made in accordance with a request of the Ministry of Power and Energy to look into the electricity tariff hike.
The Public Utility Commission says that the expenses of the Ceylon Electricity Board and the tariffs were studied deeply before submitting the recommendation. Ceylon Electricity Board has to depend on the recommendations of the Public Utility Commission when increasing electricity tariffs.
However, recent media reports said that lowering the 90 unit cut-off mark of concessionary rates for the household users was being considered.
