The newly elected ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance members to the local government bodies took their oaths on Sunday (16) before President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Temple Trees.
Addressing the ceremony to swear-in the newly appointed mayors, deputy mayors and chairpersons of 22 local government institutions won by the ruling party, the President asked local government legislators to focus their attention on fulfilling the pledges given to the public.
The President pointed out that the new heads of local government bodies should have a clear understanding on the government’s programme before they commence their duties.
Referring to the recent shootout, the President said the new appointees should learn valuable lessons from the recent incidents. He pointed out that the ruling party had an unprecedented victory at the local polls due to the unity shown by all of its members.
During the address, the President announced plans to organize a competition to select the best town of the country.
Speaking at the occasion, the General Secretary of UPFA Minister Susil Premajayantha told the new councilors that it is important to identify their responsibilities for the public as the country is headed towards development. (Colombo Lankapuvath)
